Staffordshire University | Digital Reconstruction

During Year 2 of my BA Virtual Reality Design course at Staffordshire University, we had the amazing opportunity to work with The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent.

In partnership with the museum, we were tasked with digitally recreating various objects that had previously been stored within their vault awaiting the finish of the new wing, The Spitfire Gallery. The object I chose to digitally reconstruct was a Civil Defence Helmet, worn by the rescue teams.

This project took a total of 12 weeks to finish, mostly because of other ongoing projects, and the final version of the digital reconstruction contains laser scan data, photogrammetry data, and my own 3D modelling and texturing skills. As the data received from the laser scan and photogrammetry were not perfect, there was a lot of work refining and reconstructing broken areas of the mesh to make it as near to the real life object as possible.

Both my digital recreation, and the real helmet, are displayed within the Spitfire Gallery. My digital recreation can be found by using an interactive table. The table is linked to Sketchfab, and enables viewers to rotate the asset a full 360* degrees.

In the gallery below, the finished project, plus how it looks inside the Spitfire Gallery. There is also a link to the Museum's webpage where you can find my work among other's.
